Montecristo White Series review: Light summer smoke by the river

Oh look, another shade grown cigar from Connecticut, native to Ecuador. It looks good, but no… it’s probably very boring and intended for beginners.

Such thoughts keep cigars from getting the respect they deserve from the shadows. You can have a lighter cigar and still get a lot of depth and complexity out of it.

Montecristo’s “White Series” illustrates this point perfectly. Because it needs a very mild, spicy wrapper leaf from Connecticut and some surprisingly vibrant three-year-old long filler leaves.

The result? A mild to medium Montecristo that exudes character as much as purity and class.

Montecristo White Series Unenlightened impressions

Spend the day without the boring branding and beautiful but totally boring packaging of this cigar. It is to be expected.

But smell the base of the cigar and you get a nice little surprise: cedar wood, spicy mandarin peel and a pleasant note of white pepper emerge.

The smell of these old fillers and Nicaraguan binders has a fascinating depth that makes you want more and want to try it all.

Oh, and taste-wise you get everything I just mentioned, plus a nice light sugar cane sweetness and some tannin notes too.

Montecristo White Series First smoke

Milder than a milk bath on a spring evening, the start of Montecristo’s “White Series” is as gentle as possible.

There’s a hint of tart tangerine zest, along with a faint taste of almond milk and some fresh whipped cream to hold it all together. A very nice start, but also by far the least interesting part of the cigar.

1st half

It doesn’t take long for this cigar to go from a little unremarkable to medium-bodied and Nicaraguan. These ancient ingredients really add some roundness to the mouthfeel and overall presence of this blend.

Nutty, with dried cedar and some white pepper keeping the sting alive along the palate, the first half hour of this stick is sure to surprise and impress.

2nd half

2nd half

Take it easy and browse slowly and you’ll soon be rewarded with roasted and salted nut flavors with this blend. It all starts with cashews and almonds, but halfway through the cigar it transitions to walnuts.

The baking spices are medium-bodied but still light in flavor and come out of the unlit end at just the right time to overlay the walnut notes.

Cinnamon and nutmeg move from the nose to the palate, while the tannic dryness of the oak adds freshness and makes you want to keep the drink close.

Parting clouds

The end of this knitting provides a pleasant surprise. As this is now a medium cigar, the taste leans more towards light leather and sun-ripened tobacco spice than the mild Connecticut.

There’s also very little char or aftertaste to be found, which is somewhat unusual in cigars grown in the shadows of Connecticut.

Ash/burning / smoke/drawing

If you’re a fan of round, milky cigar smoke, the Montecristo “White Series” is probably right for you. In fact, the smoke and draw of these cigars proved so outstanding that I put on my review stogie just to control the flow of the damn thing a little.

In terms of construction, every stick I smoked in the 5 pack that was sent to me was packed a little loosely, almost to the point where I felt like I was underfilled.

Soft spots were also visible on three of the five pins. And while I thought this looseness was due to the too gentle pull I had experienced, the last stitch was noticeably tighter than the first ones, and the pull was just as long as the others.

Another problem was the heat, as each incense stick burned quite hot even when smoked as slowly as possible. But the ash, burn line and burn of each smoked cigar was flawless and impressive, so kudos to Montecristo for this part of the review.

 Final thoughts

I found I liked Montecristo’s “White Series” more than I thought I would. It’s certainly not a perfect cigar, as it’s a bit dry (and spicy) for my taste, but that doesn’t mean it’s not ideal for other people.

The shorter “Rothchilde” vitola is also a good selling point for this smoke, especially in the summer when a seemingly harmless cigar smoke can lead to heat stroke. That’s why I went on the river that day for my review. . .
