William Allison White

William Allison White VC TD (19 October 1894 – 13 September 1974) was an English , recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantrys in the face of the enemy, that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was 23 years old and a temporary lieutenant in the 38th Battalions of the Machine Gun Corps, (part of the 38th (Welsh) Division) of the British Army during,

the First World War .when the following action occurred for which he was awarded the VC.

When the advance was stopped by enemy machine guns at Gouzeaucourt, France, on September 18, 1918, Lieutenant White rushed alone to a gun emplacement,

fired the three guns and captured the gun. Later, he and two men attacked a gun emplacement and were both shot immediately.

He went to the gun alone, killed the team and captured the gun. On a third occasion, when the advance was again delayed, this officer collected a small party and rushed to the post,

inflicting heavy casualties on the garrison. He then consolidated the position through clever use of captured enemies and his own machine guns. The full quote was published in a supplement to the London Gazette of 12 November 1918 (dated 15 November 1918):

His Majesty the KING has been pleased to approve the award of the Victoria Cross to the officers, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men named below:

For outstanding courage and initiative in the attack.

When the infantry advance was slowed by an enemy machine gun, he single-handedly charged to the gun position,

Government and Politics of Russia

At its greatest extent, the geographical extent of the former Soviet Union was one-sixth of the Earth’s land area.

It spanned eleven time zones and consisted of more than a hundred different nationalities, 22 of which had a population of over a million.

On October 1, 1939, Winston Churchill said that Russia was “an enigma, shrouded in mystery and enigma.” This course attempts to unravel the mystery by providing a comprehensive introduction to the history of political development in Russia from the 1917 Revolution to the present.

The course is divided into two (unequal) parts: 1) a short, chronological overview of the Soviet era, which ended with the introduction of radical reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union (the goal of the first part).

The purpose of the course is to provide important background information for students without prior knowledge of Soviet history. and 2)

the many challenges of state-building, democratization and radical market reforms facing the new post-Soviet Russian state.

In the 1990s, Russia seemed to be on the way to greater democracy and integration with the West. But with the rise of Vladimir Putin in 2000,

the country experienced a dramatic decline in democracy and a resurgence of authoritarianism in almost all areas of domestic life and politics.

Today, Russia seems to be on a very uncertain path, away from communism and towards an uncertain future.

This course is designed to highlight one of the most dramatic and important political, economic and social changes in recent history.

I am interested  the population dynamics and ecologys of marine fish. In particular, I am interested in the spatial dynamics of reef fish harvested and degraded by humans.

I hope to improve the effectiveness of management and conservation efforts by combining integrated modeling methods and

designing fishery-independent surveys for reef-associated species. My current research focuses on using active acoustic methods to obtain data on the population size and distribution of reef fish in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico.
